Speaking at a formal academy at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre, also attended by President of Serbia Tomislav Nikolic, which marked one century of the Serbian military aviation and 50 years of missile defence units, Vucic said that Serbia has a future because it has an army that does not threaten or harm anyone, but protects the country’s sovereignty and its skies clearly and in line with the Constitution.
The people who has such an army has something to be proud of, Vucic underlined.
He said that the pilots who lost their lives in 1999 defending the country are Serbia’s pride to which future generations will look up and who will be an example to children of how to protect the freedom and how to protect and keep Serbia.
The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence underlined that it is our obligation to remember their deeds, as well as the deeds of all other soldiers who died defending their homeland.
They are our heroes we will always be proud of, Vucic told airmen, wishing them safe skies.
Vucic underlined that heroic deeds of the Serbian aviation are a foundation on which a better tomorrow is built for us and our descendants.
He said that the Serbian Army will improve military equipment and weapons in the near future, particularly of aviation units, with the help of friends, but also knowledge, experience and decisiveness of its members to defend freedom.
He underlined that the celebrating of the 100th anniversary of aviation of a privilege of a small number of countries in the world and that this shows the high level of awareness of the Serbian public from that time which placed Serbia among the most developed countries of the world.
The ceremony at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre was also attended by Serbian parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic, Chief of the Serbian Army General Staff Lieutenant General Ljubisa Dikovic, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Zarko Obradovic and Director of the Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo-Metohija Aleksandar Vulin.
Members of the military leadership and wartime aviation and air defence, as well as representatives of cultural and scientific life of Serbia also attended the event.
Air force units of Serbia were founded on 24 December 1912 by order of the then Defence Minister, the Duke Radomir Putnik in Nis, when the Aviation Missile Command was established.
The formation of wartime aviation and air defence was the result of scientific and technological development that took place in early 1960s.
