Jeremic said after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that Belgrade and Damascus completely agree about the Kosovo issue and that Syria supports Serbia’s diplomatic efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Syria is a very important country, where the OIC will have a meeting in ten days, the Minister said and noted that a group of countries, led by Saudi Arabia, will call on the Islamic world to support the independence of Kosovo.
He expressed his hope that such a resolution will be prevented on May 23, when the meeting is to take place.
Jeremic added that at his meeting with the Syrian President they discussed possibilities of improving their bilateral cooperation.
The Minister noted that Syria is now opening up to the world in the economic, political and other senses, stressing that there is room and potential for economic cooperation.
He said they reached agreement to hold a session of the Serbian-Syrian mixed committee before the year’s end, as well as to speed up the formation of the Serbian-Syrian Council.
During the economic crisis our economy should try to be present in all countries, stressed Jeremic adding that the visit is a good political basis for understanding and cooperation.
He added that at the meeting with al-Assad they discussed the situation in the Middle East, where Syria is an indispensable factor for the creation of lasting peace.
Syria is engaged in talks with all factors in the Middle East and we hope that the upcoming months can yield results since the odds are better than in any given moment in pervious decades, concluded Jeremic.
