At a celebration held in the Serbian Parliament, the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED) presented these certificates to representatives of Novi Sad, Krusevac, Uzice, Smederevo and Paracin, thus increasing the number of certified towns and municipalities to 21.
Ciric underlined that during its past mandate, the government recognised and endorsed NALED’s initiative for the creation of a better business ambience by introducing the so-called guillotine of regulations, which reduced red tape by two-thirds.
He noted that a reduction in superfluous administration procedures is very important for attracting FDI both at state and local levels, adding that FDI in Serbia in 2011 reached around €3 billion.
Chairman of NALED Board of Management Vladimir Cupic recalled that five years ago, NALED and the USAID launched a certification programme for municipalities, adding that 21 municipalities have received this certificate and applications by another 33 are being processed.
Cupic observed that the certification procedure is not easy because municipalities must meet over one hundred criteria and subcriteria to be granted a positive assessment.
Cupic and representatives from internationally recognised certification companies SGS from Switzerland and TUV from Germany signed an Agreement on cooperation on the certification programme.
He underlined that the inclusion of these two companies in Serbia’s certification process will help to enhance this process bearing in mind that certificates will have an additional denotation of quality.
The award ceremony was attended by German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas, Israeli Ambassador Yossef Levy, US Deputy Ambassador Lee Litzenberger, representative of the EU Delegation to Serbia Freik Janmaat, NALED members and partners and representatives from the Serbian government, foreign donors, investors and local self-governments.
