Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Professor Dragan Glamočić, PhD, met today with Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Serbia Edward Ferguson.
Glamočić stressed that the Republic of Serbia attaches great importance to cooperation with the United Kingdom, and expressed his belief that there is significant room for its further improvement, especially in the field of agriculture and the food industry, both through institutional cooperation and through specific projects and investments.
The officials highlighted that trade in agricultural and food products is increasing, with an annual growth of around 9%, and it is particularly significant that it is balanced and almost equal on both sides.
It was pointed out that British products are well represented on the Serbian market, while Serbian products, especially fruit, occupy a significant place on the British market.
The interlocutors agreed that there is room for further strengthening economic cooperation and opening new opportunities for British investments in Serbian agriculture, especially given the growing interest of British companies in investing in our agricultural sector.
The possibilities for financial support through British export credits were also considered, as well as for investing in projects in the field of water supply and infrastructure.
Glamočić said that new investments, especially in the processing sector, would have a great impact on the development and competitiveness of domestic agriculture.
The Minister also assessed that the participation of the United Kingdom in financing infrastructure projects, including the construction of local roads, would be of exceptional importance for Serbia, as it would contribute to better connectivity between villages and cities, the preservation of rural areas and the further improvement of agricultural production.
Glamočić and Ambassador Ferguson also discussed cooperation in the field of new technologies, including the application of biotechnology and artificial intelligence in agriculture.
Speaking about Serbian agrarian policy, the Minister emphasised that one of the priorities is the preservation of small farms and the development of rural areas, while simultaneously strengthening the processing industry.
He explained to Ambassador Ferguson that this year, the justification of incentives by invoices was introduced, with the aim of ensuring that the funds allocated by the state are directly invested in agricultural production, and in order to prevent misuse and introduce a greater degree of transparency and fairness in the support system.
Glamočić stated that in the coming period, the Ministry will also work on a clearer separation of commercial and non-commercial farms, as well as encouraging farmers to link their production with tourism, as this represents a significant development opportunity for Serbia.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was assessed that the cooperation between Serbia and the United Kingdom has a stable basis and significant potential for further growth, with the common goal of improving economic relations and developing the agricultural sector for mutual benefit, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management.
