The key topics of discussion were the diversification of oil and gas supply sources and routes, gas infrastructure, the implementation of the electricity package and integration with the EU electricity market.
Đedović Handanović emphasised that the EU is Serbia’s most important partner in many fields, recalling that significant headway has been made over the past three years in energy sector reforms and alignment with EU regulations.
Preparations for the construction of the interconnector with North Macedonia are progressing well, she said, announcing that works will begin in early autumn.
EU support for the development and construction of internal gas infrastructure is also important, Đedović Handanović noted, recalling that Serbia is the first in the region to have met all the prerequisites for integration with the EU electricity market.
As she pointed out, verification from European institutions is expected as soon as possible, as Serbia has fulfilled all the necessary requirements on its part to integrate its electricity market with that of the EU.
The Working Group meeting was also attended by EU Ambassador to Serbia Andreas von Beckerath, Director of Energy Security and International Relations at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy Cristina Lobillo Borrero, representatives of the European Commission, as well as representatives of the EU Delegation to Serbia.
Von Beckerath stated that the Working Group is an excellent format for discussions on cooperation between Serbia and the EU.
Energy is in focus everywhere due to the geopolitical situation, and it is important to discuss how the EU can support Serbia’s efforts to maintain stable supply and diversify oil and gas supply sources and routes. This is one of the areas where concrete and visible progress has been achieved in reforms, he said.
