At a conference "Consumer protection in Serbia: How to improve it" Petrovic indicated that the most important task will be to draft the text of consumer protection strategy, and to clearly define the objectives and timeframe for their achievement.
Consultation on the establishment of this council, consisting of representatives from government, associations, consumers and traders, and the business community, is underway, the Minister reiterated and explained that this would be a specific forum for open discussion on all issues of importance to the area.
He said consumer protection is important because it establishes a system of rules and constitutes a system that protects those who are weaker or lacking in information.
Petrovic said that the Law on consumer protection was adopted last year.
Serbia has shown a clear intention to complete its overall economic system and institutions and adjust them to the systems that represent the best European practice, he stressed.
Head of EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert stressed that the EU continues to support the harmonisation of regulations in Serbia with the European regulations, as well as their full implementation, which is funded the project "Strengthening consumer protection in Serbia".
He said that the project, whose value is €2.5 million will run until February 2014.
Degert stressed that the EU attaches great importance to the protection of consumers and that the Union established such legal frameworks that enable the fulfillment of their specific rights.
Consumer policy must constantly adapt to changes that occur, he said, adding that Serbia has made great efforts to align its legislation with 15 EU directives in the area of consumer protection.
