On the occasion of the World Day of Fighting Violence Against Children, Lalovic talked with children from Prijepolje, Valjevo, Zrenjanin, Subotica and Smederevska Palanka, as well as with representatives of the organisation Save the Children and the Children’s Cultural Centre.
He stressed that it is easy to talk about physical violence because it is obvious; however a graver form is psychological violence which cannot be seen but leaves deeper-reaching consequences.
According to Lalovic, certain groups of children are most affected by violence such as the children of displaced persons and refugees, but a particular problem is the Roma population as this category of citizens is marginalised form the very start.
Lalovic recalled that the Ministry aims to give everyone an equal opportunity, adding that little over a year ago parliament adopted the Law on family which defines the term violence in a completely different way. He also added that not long ago parliament received a demand to establish the office of a children's ombudsman. The proposal is expected to be adopted in spring.
Apart from building systems and institutions, the way these institutions function is also important, that is, the practical steps in the field that would help create conditions for the reduction of violence against children, explained the Minister. He pointed to the necessity of changing the method of work and behaviour of people dealing with the problems of children.
