Parivodic said that Gorenje will thus get the status of a local manufacturer on a strategically important market.
The Minister said that according to the amount of foreign direct investment in 2006 that will exceed $3.5 billion, Serbia will hold the top position in the Balkans, and recalled that a record $1.5 billion was invested in Serbia last year.
Gorenje President Franjo Bobinac said that during the initial stage, the Valjevo factory will produce 840 appliances a day intended for export to all markets on which Gorenje is already present, adding that the factory currently employs 330 workers.
Bobinac explained that Valjevo was chosen because of its proximity to key markets and good railway connections. He also said he hopes that the Valjevo plant will help increase Gorenje's share by 25% in production outside Slovenia.
According to Bobinac, Gorenje has the status of a domestic brand in Serbia and every home here owns at least two or three Gorenje appliances. He also added that after the Czech Republic, Serbia is the second foreign country in which Gorenje has opened its factory.
He said that by end-2007 the Valjevo plant will employ 1100 workers and annual production will stand at one million refrigerators and freezers intended for sale on all markets where Gorenje already does business.
Serbian Minister of Finance Mladjan Dinkic also attended the opening of the factory and promised Gorenje representatives that if the factory employs an additional 1100 workers in Valjevo, the government will provide state subsidies of €4,000 for each employee.
Dinkic added that customs procedure for Gorenje products made in Valjevo will be facilitated because a customs office will be opened on factory grounds.
The Valjevo factory was built on March 1, stretches over 6.5 hectares and is leased out to the Slovenian company for 99 years. Trial production at the plant began on September 15.
