Opening a two-day workshop Mary Curie programme, marking the 150 year birth anniversary of Nikola Tesla, Popovic said that he reached an agreement with EU Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik that Serbia be included in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) as of 2007, which will allow Serbian scientists to access EU funds.
According to Popovic, this meeting is an opportunity for young researchers from the EU, Croatia and Serbia engaged in disciplines greatly contributed by Tesla to exchange experiences and learning aimed at widening their personal and professional horizons.
He expressed expectation that the event will be a move toward establishment of active cooperation within the scientific and technological cooperation programme between Croatia and Serbia.
EU Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik said that potential candidate countries for EU membership should become associate members and be involved in scientific and research space, noting that this workshop is a step forward in EU connection efforts.
He announced that a new category of Schengen visa should be introduced for research workers in October 2007, which would allow them multiple entrances.
The governments of Serbia and Croatia are jointly marking the 150th birth anniversary of Nikola Tesla through the Mary Curie programme which started in Zagreb on October 7 while the second part is taking place in Belgrade today and tomorrow.
The workshop is organised under the auspices of the European Commission. Head of the European Commission delegation in Serbia Josep Lloveras and representatives of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.
