State Secretary at the Ministry of Capital Investment Milan Miljevic opened yesterday in Pozarevac the Viminacium archaeological park and said that the park has all it takes to become as important for Serbia as Pompeii is for Italy.
Miljevic said the park is important both for research and tourism and can be efficiently preserved only if it is under proper protection.
He recalled that in 1949 Viminacium was declared an exquisite cultural heritage site and protected by the state. It can now become the symbol of one of the richest archaeological sites dating from the Roman period not only in Serbia but also worldwide, he added.
US Ambassador to Serbia Michael Polt said that Serbia has considerable historical treasure and tradition and this Roman residential place is fascinating and extremely valuable.
He announced that the US government will help equip the computer centre at the site and assist in the printing of a monograph on Viminacium.
German Ambassador to Serbia Andreas Zobel said that Viminacium may become an important tourist attraction in the Danube region, adding that Germany supports the development of local tourism and Viminacium offers a good business opportunity for the region.
