Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated today in Milan, where he attended the reception and ceremony marking the opening of the Winter Olympic Games, that numerous leaders are clearly stating that Serbia is on the path to EU membership.
In a statement to Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), Macut pointed out that during the reception at the San Siro stadium, he pointed out to President of Italy Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni the friendly and fraternal relations between Serbia and Italy, as well as the strategic partnership for the benefit of the two peoples.
He said that Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani is an exceptional friend of Serbia, emphasising that Italy is one of the countries that, together with France, has a constructive and positive approach to Serbia in the process of European integration.
The Prime Minister added that Italy continuously supports Serbia on its European path and that, in cooperation with France and Germany, it will strive to be a mediator who can influence the shaping of future political plans in Europe.
Serbia is very well received in Italy, he underlined, pointing to the long-standing relations and personal acquaintance of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić with numerous leaders, who clearly recognise Serbia as a very responsible country with good chances of joining the EU.
Macut added that Estonian President Alar Karis, with whom he had the opportunity to talk, also fully understands that Europe must in some way change politically according to the situation it finds itself in and that the conflict that is practically on its doorstep, which has been going on between Russia and Ukraine for four years, must be stopped and a solution must be found.
According to him, there are many topics that indirectly concern Serbia as well.
The Prime Minister assessed that this event represented an exceptional opportunity to meet with numerous European officials, as well as to establish new contacts and strengthen existing relations, with the mediation of Italy as an exceptional host.
He expressed the expectation that in the coming period, more world leaders will visit Belgrade, the Prime Minister concluded.
At the reception, Macut also spoke with US Vice President J.D. Vance, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and his predecessor on this position, Ban Ki-moon.
