Belgrade cherishes legacy, values of Non-Aligned Movement

Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc chaired a panel session today as part of a high-level commemorative meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries, held in Belgrade from 1 to 6 September 1961.

Welcoming the participants of the meeting in Belgrade, Macut stressed that although international circumstances have changed, the values of the Non-Aligned Movement remain relevant today.

At a time of numerous conflicts and complex geopolitical relations, the commemorative meeting provides an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of dialogue, multilateralism and respect for international law, the Prime Minister said.

He pointed out that six and a half decades after the conference that secured Belgrade’s place in the history of world diplomacy, the Serbian capital is once again bringing together representatives from different parts of the world and sending a message that peace, dialogue, cooperation, equality and mutual respect are essential for overcoming divisions and building a more stable future.

Macut noted that this anniversary holds special significance for Serbia and that the country cherishes the legacy of the Belgrade Conference with particular respect while continuing to develop friendly relations with the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
