Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, and Minister for Family Care and Demography Jelena Žarić Kovačević opened the conference “The First Year of the Alimony Fund – No Child Should Have to Wait” today, marking the first anniversary of the fund’s implementation.

At the event, held at the Expo Playground at the Belgrade Fair, Macut said that the Alimony Fund is a mechanism through which the state has demonstrated that no child in Serbia should suffer because of the irresponsibility of adults.
The Prime Minister stressed that when a parent who is obliged to pay alimony fails to do so, the child must not be left waiting, which is why the state has assumed responsibility to intervene, provide the necessary funds and protect every child’s right to security and a dignified life.
He added that the results achieved during the Alimony Fund’s first year are not merely statistical figures, but represent a more secure everyday life for children.
Žarić Kovačević stated that, since the fund began operating, 643 payment decisions have been issued and more than RSD 63 million has been paid out.
The Minister specified that 959 children and young people up to the age of 26 who are in full-time education have exercised their right to temporary maintenance support.
She explained that the state provides children with financial support when they need it, while recovering the amount paid from the debtor, emphasising that the essence of the system is that children do not have to wait and that the obligation of the parent required to pay alimony does not cease.
The conference continued with two panel discussions examining the Alimony Fund from the perspective of its beneficiaries, as well as the institutions and experts involved in its implementation.
