Serbian Minister of Justice Zoran Stojkovic said last night that the Serbian Supreme Court has huge influence on the implementation of reforms in the judiciary aimed at creating an independent, efficient, quality, responsible and transparent judiciary.
At a solemn academy held last night at the National Theatre on the occasion of 160th anniversary of the establishing of the Supreme Court, Stojkovic said that this jubilee also speaks of the efforts to realise an idea of the rule of law and freedom towards which we all strive.
President of the Serbian Supreme Court Vida Petrovic-Skero said that today's Supreme Court is a constitutional and historical category, a state institution that has been shaped in the course of the previous years of the rise and fall of Serbia.
The Supreme Court is one of the greatest achievements of the Serbian people, said Petrovic-Skero adding that thanks to the 160-year old court, there is democracy in Serbia today, equality for all before the law, justice without discrimination and respect for human rights and individual freedoms.
Also present at the academy were Parliament Speaker Predrag Markovic, presidents of courts from all over Serbia, representatives of religious communities, the diplomatic corps, as well as renowned people from Serbia's cultural and public life. A film entitled "One Hundred and Sixty Years of the Supreme Court of Serbia" was also screened.
Petrovic-Skero officially opened an exhibition on the history of the Serbian Supreme Court at the National Theatre's gallery.
