In his speech at today's session of the 50th general assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Popovic said that the contract was signed by representatives of IAEA, Vinca Institute and a consortium of three Russian companies that will transport the used fuel.
He added that a donors conference will be held on Thursday at the UN Vienna headquarters aimed at implementing a project regarding the transportation of the remaining fuel from the Vinca Institute to Russia, which, according to IAEA estimates, requires around €10 million, he added.
Popovic stressed that Serbia is an independent state dedicated to using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and is devoted to essential IAEA principles regarding the safe use of nuclear energy for the purpose of developing the international community and for the public good.
He confirmed that Serbia intends to become a member of the additional Protocol on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as soon as it gets technically prepared and sets up the necessary human and administrative resources so as to start fulfilling the obligations after it signs and ratifies the Treaty. He added that work on achieving this goal has already started.
