At a press conference on the protection of intellectual property held on Mt Kosmaj, Parivodic recalled that the law specifies the rights and obligations of inspectors who are entitled to confiscate the goods they deem counterfeit.
According to Parivodic, inspectors will not find it difficult to distinguish between original and fake goods and the companies whose rights are endangered are highly motivated to help state organs in fighting piracy.
State Secretary of Trade, Tourism and Services Vlajko Senic said that the ever since the Law on intellectual property protection was adopted, 3,500 pirated films, 10,000 pirated books and 5,000 fake foreign products have been seized, as well as a welter of clothing items with fake trademark labels.
US Ambassador to Belgrade Michael Polt announced that the US government will grant half a million dollars to the Bureau for the Protection of Intellectual Property, which will then be used for human resource capacity building and better coordination among institutions in charge.
Speaking about the current state of intellectual property protection in Serbia, Polt said that it is satisfactory, thanks to the measures and laws that the Serbian government adopted in the previous period.
Thus Serbia managed to avoid getting on the US negative list when it comes to piracy and other forms of counterfeiting or breaching intellectual property rights. He added that it is important that Serbia continues with its work on piracy suppression and engages inspectors, customs officials, police and other organs to enforce the Law on intellectual property protection.
He also stressed that the Serbian government will have wholehearted support of the US Chamber of Commerce, which organised training for 200 prosecutors, judges and police officers last year. He said that this will undoubtedly help Serbia become a member of the World Trade Organisation and thus strengthen its economy.
The two-day conference was organised by the US Chamber of Commerce in Serbia. Market and financial inspectors, as well as representatives of police and other institutions in charge attended the event.
