Agreement on land sale for new US embassy signed

Serbian Minister of International Economic Relations Milan Parivodic and US Ambassador to Belgrade Michael Polt have signed today an agreement on sale of land for construction of a new $100 million US embassy in Belgrade.

Parivodic said that the embassy will be located on Bulevar Mira and noted that the property was sold in accordance with the Law on property legal relations, under which “building land can be sold to a foreign company for building diplomatic and consular offices”.
He expressed hope that the new US embassy will decorate Belgrade and that it will confirm good and long-lasting friendly relations between the two countries. Parivodic also said that this government is proud that it solved one seemingly technical problem.
Polt voiced satisfaction that the job between the governments of the two countries has been completed at the moment when 125 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and the US are celebrated, adding that the new building of the US embassy will represent a powerful symbol and mark the friendship between the peoples of Serbia and the US.
He said that $15 million was paid for the land which covers approximately 42,000 square metres. At the same time, he thanked Serbian officials who ensured that one more in a series of significant contracts between the two countries be signed.
According to Polt in next four to five years during the construction of the US embassy's edifice several hundred jobs will be opened for Serbian citizens, while some 60% of the investment will go directly to the local economy.
The US Ambassador expressed special gratitude to Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica who, as he said, "shares our commitment to developing friendly relations between the United States and Serbia".
