EAR donates €953,000 for rebuilding Vrsac artery roads

Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Zoran Loncar, European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) Head of Operations in Serbia Christos Gofas and President of the Vrsac municipality Jovica Zarkula signed today an agreement on a donation worth €953,000 for carrying out the project ‘Construction and Reconstruction of Local Road and Street Networks’ in the Vrsac municipality.

Loncar was satisfied with the signing of the agreement, which envisages the construction and reconstruction of 10 km of artery roads in Vrsac, and stated that it represents a major part of the project for the reconstruction of public service infrastructure in Serbia.

He said that Vrsac is the first municipality to be the user of this project and stated that in the other seven to eight municipalities, the donations will be completed by the end of the year. The Minister recalled that Vrsac is one of the most successful municipalities when it comes to the functioning of the local government.

Loncar expressed the hope that this donation, which is only part of the project for reconstruction of the artery roads in the Vrsac municipality, worth a total of €4.95 million, will contribute not only to the successful organisation of the 2005 Men’s Basketball European Championship, being held in this city, but will also improve the everyday life of citizens in Vrsac.

The Minister announced that the Serbian government and the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government will strive, with the assistance of other projects, to try to find other possibilities to help citizens of Vrsac and residents of neighbouring villages to solve their water supply problems.

EAR Head of Operations Christos Gofas pointed out that the purpose of the EAR in Serbia is to support Serbia in its integration process during the stabilisation and association process, and added that €1.1 billion has been invested in Serbia to date.

According to him, the project ‘Construction and Reconstruction of Local Road and Street Networks’ in Vrsac has two main objectives: to assist the reconstruction of streets, and to train the Municipality of Vrsac employees to implement certain European norms and standards.

President of the Basketball Federation of Serbia and Montenegro Miodrag Babic also attended the signing of the agreement.
