Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic stated today that the domestic economy lacks more than 2,000 freight cars and a number of passenger carriages, and said that if the projects falling under the ‘Railways of Serbia’ programme are completed within the set deadline, prospects for better results in this enterprise are guaranteed.
Ilic stated at the ‘Railways of Serbia’ Media Centre that there has been an international call for bids for the Belgrade railway station centre in Prokop, for which more than 13 worldwide companies have answered, wanting to invest more than €200 million in the project.
The realisation of this project is expected to begin in late September, and the Ministry of Capital Investment has allocated certain funds for the preparatory works, stated Ilic. He added that the job has been given to Belgrade-based engineering firm Energoprojekt.
Ilic said that despite subsidy reductions, the rail industry has remained one of the country’s driving economic forces towards progress, and added that the Serbian government will be prepared to support and increase the financial assistance needed for restructuring.
Ilic also confirmed that the bridge at Ostruznica will be put into service by the end of August.
