Lalovic, opening the consultations for the meeting of the regional Gender Equality Project, organised by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Policy and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), pointed out the importance of changes in this field, which should be carried out at the same time, both in legislation and in the citizens’ minds.
Rastislav Vrbenski, Deputy to the UNDP Permanent Representative to Serbia-Montenegro, who is carrying out this project, pointed out that the question of gender equality is not the product of human development, but the key. He recalled that experience has shown that inequality in this area leads to poverty, since equal treatment of basic human rights does not exist, as well as equal education access.
He pointed out the importance of regional cooperation and the exchange of experience with other countries, and added that this project, which will last 2 years and be carried out in both Serbia and Montenegro, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, should promote and enhance gender equality in all areas of life in the region.
Today’s meeting, which had the aim of presenting the programme and conducting consultations before the regional meeting to be held later in September, was attended by more than 25 representatives of the Serbian government’s Council for Gender Equality, non-governmental and international organisations.
The main aims of the project are creating a sufficient number of professionals on gender equality, the assistance in the building of capacities of recently established institutions in this field, and raising citizens’ awareness on this topic.
The project will be divided into three stages and will contribute to the third millennium’s goal of gender equality development, it was stated at the meeting.
