Speaking at a panel on the role of non-governmental organisations in the EU integration process today, Head of the EU Integration Office Tanja Miscevic said that cooperation between the non-governmental sector and the government is quite natural given that the process of European integration in any country calls for the engagement of the entire society.
Miscevic reiterated that the success of this process depends on increasing awareness among the population of what the EU is and what are European values. She said that Serbia’s joining the EU is not an end in itself but that it rather overlaps with the transition of politics, economy, civil society, and the entire state.
David Hudson of the European Commission delegation in Serbia-Montenegro said that it is crucial to include the entire society in the EU integration process because an EU accession positively changes the life of a country and its citizens.
Fund for an Open Society Director Jadranka Jelincic said that the Memorandum has formalised a year-long cooperation between the Office and the non-governmental sector.
Jelincic noted that certain tasks belong to the civil sector, not the government or parliament, and that Serbia’s integration into the EU will not be as quick and successful as it should be unless the non-governmental sector fails to do its part of the work.
Other non-governmental organisations are also welcome to join the Memorandum of Cooperation.
