Serbia-Montenegrin Minister of International Relations Predrag Ivanovic pointed out that the funds were provided in accordance to the project of the Serbian government’s Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Affairs, from the partner fund, jointly established by the government of Serbia-Montenegro and Japan in 2001.
Ivanovic stressed that to date Japan has approved $90 million worth of assistance for infrastructure projects, ecology, agriculture, as well as for social issues and health.
Ambassador Tanabe recalled that the Japanese government had promised to Serbia-Montenegro at the donors’ conference, held in 2001, economic aid worth $50 million for energy supply, public transport, health, ecology, agriculture and the development of the economic system.
He added that the Japanese government provided $13.7 million for creating a partner fund, which also financed this project for the building of flats for disabled war veterans.
Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Affairs Slobodan Lalovic pointed out that the family of the disabled war veterans, as well as the families whose members were killed in the war, are extremely interested in this project and that this financial assistance was the only way to assist them, considering the economic situation in Serbia.
Lalovic announced the possibility of establishing a regular fund that would exist until all of the needs of veterans and invalids have been met.
Minister of International Economic Relations Milan Parivodic stated that this ministry has received about $70 million of Japanese assistance by now, which is extremely significant since it was given without any conditioning, and with full regard to the priorities being imposed on Serbia-Montenegro.
