Serbian Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management Ziva Zebeljan said today that provisional wheat supplies of 530,000 tonnes are sufficient for the country’s commodity reserves, adding that Serbia will have enough wheat for export this year.
At a session of the National Assembly’s Agriculture Board, Zebeljan said that the Ministry is considering a possibility of helping farmers store wheat and providing favourable loans for sowing with one billion dinars from the budget, so that farmers could be paid on time.
He said that by this decision, the Ministry aims to reduce the excessive wheat supply on the market, which could occur after the harvest, due to start in a few days. The excessive wheat supply could reduce its buyout price, he explained.
According to him, the Ministry’s donation to farmers will be used for storing wheat until a more favourable price is offered in the market, and the hike in the buyout price will be far less if the wheat is evenly distributed.
The National Assembly’s Agriculture Board advised farmers not to sell the wheat immediately after the harvest, if possible, but to store it and wait for a better price at the year’s end.
