Labus, who is on an official visit to Brussels, said after the meeting that certain conditions have to be fulfilled so that negotiations could get under way. He said that both Solana and he voiced hope that negotiations will begin in October.
Labus announced that Solana will visit Belgrade in three weeks, when talks on this issue will be continued.
Solana said that the EU wants the political situation in Serbia-Montenegro to stabilise, and that the negotiations on the SAA begin and be completed successfully.
Labus and Solana also discussed the crisis concerning the adoption of the EU Constitution and budget difficulties in the EU. The two officials agreed that that matter will have no influence on Serbia-Montenegro's EU accession.
Labus also spoke earlier today with European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, who confirmed that talks on the SAA could begin in early October this year.
Labus said that the best period to complete the negotiations and sign the SAA is nine months and he stressed that Rehn has reiterated the EU’s commitment to all the obligations within the 2003 Thessalonica Agenda.
The Deputy Prime Minister also said that he received assurances that the EU will approve a new tranche of macroeconomic assistance to Serbia-Montenegro, worth €75 million, and added that on July 11 the European Commission should present to the EU Council of Ministers a strategy for negotiations with Serbia-Montenegro.
