Naumov, who is on a three-day visit to Brussels with representatives of the Serbian Electric Power Industry and the Oil Industry of Serbia, said last night in talks with EU Commissioner for Energy Andris Piebalgs, that Serbia has introduced many European standards and laws in the energy sector, and that the restructuring of the energy sector is nearly complete.
In talks with Piebalgs, the Minister stressed that there was considerable investment in environmental protection considering that the energy sector is a major polluter. He pointed to the necessity of EU support in resolving social problems of the transition such as creation of economically viable energy prices and the issue of the surplus of workers due to the restructuring of the energy sector.
The delegation requested that Serbia-Montenegro be allowed to use energy funds from the “pre-accession aid” programme for EU membership candidates, and their European Commission collocutors promised to exert efforts in this respect.
Minister Naumov reminded that Serbia has the advantages of good infrastructure and mineral wealth, and said that after reconstruction and better use of its capacities the Djerdap hydroelectric plant should become one of the leading hydroelectric plants in the region.
