Kostunica said that this session has historic significance given that the new composition of the Coordinating Body will help to achieve economic development and improve interethnic relations.
Kostunica said that the model of economic development in Kragujevac, Bor, and Vranje could be applied in these three southern Serbian municipalities as well.
Serbian President Boris Tadic said that the process of stabilisation in the South of Serbia is the most successful model applied in the Balkans in recent years and expressed the hope that this model could also be implemented in Kosovo-Metohija, where Serbia currently does not have full presence.
Tadic congratulated representatives of the Serb and ethnic-Albanian communities on their decision to take part in the work of this body and thus assume responsibility for regional stability and prosperity of all ethnic-communities.
He called on citizens to participate in the national programme for the development of the South of Serbia, recalling that Serbia and Montenegro are on the road of European and trans-Atlantic integrations and that everybody has to do their part of the job in order to achieve these goals.
Tadic expressed the hope that heads of the Bujanovac, Presevo, and Medvedja municipalities, together with all the citizens, will make their contributions to the stabilisation of Serbia.
Head of the Coordinating Body for Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja Nebojsa Covic said that after four and a half years of active work on resolving the crisis in these municipalities, today’s gathering marks the successful completion of one phase and the beginning of the next phase of economic development and improvement of the living standards in these municipalities.
Covic assessed that the time has come for all those who share a vision of a European future of Serbia to act and stressed that the presence of the Serbian President and Prime Minister at the session of the reorganised Coordinating Body sends a strong message that Serbia is determined to fulfil its obligations and in this respect it expects support of all citizens living in these municipalities.
According to him, the first steps were marked by the inclusion of the municipal president in the work of the Coordinating Body in the capacity of deputy president, as well as a broader inclusion of all communities through the eight coordinating groups that were set up.
Covic said that through the Coordinating Body, the Serbian government has invested 3.24 billion dinars in the past four and a half years for the development of the Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja municipalities, while the international community invested 1.55 billion dinars.
US Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro Michael Polt stated that the policy of cooperation is always stronger than the policy of division and that the participation of the local population is very important for prosperity and security of this region.
Polt emphasised that the US welcomes the reconstruction of this body and its work in building peace and cooperation among the communities.
