Opening the European meeting of the World Tourist Organisation (WTO) held in Belgrade, Dimitrijevic said that Serbia has to invest a lot in upgrading tourist infrastructure and increasing an insufficient number of capacities, especially in Belgrade.
He explained that as part of the development strategy, Serbia needs to increase the share of profit from tourism in GDP by 2015 and to once again become an important tourist destination.
The Minister said that the new law on tourism will introduce tourist compensations as a kind of rent for legal and physical persons in tourism and the establishment of a tourism development fund, which will approve favourable loans and subsidies.
WTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli said that Serbia should focus on construction of small family hotels and villas in order to achieve sustainable development in tourism.
He said that there are no reasons for Serbia and Montenegro not to achieve good results in tourism, as other countries of central and eastern Europe have managed to do recently.
Montenegrin Minister of Tourism Predrag Nenezic said that Montenegro will invest in its seaside the most, and then in mountain centres where it will build smaller hotels.
According to Nenezic, in order to compete on the world market with its seaside, Montenegro will focus on construction of luxury accommodation and improvement of the quality of existing hotels.
