Stojkovic opened a seminar focusing on strengthening Serbia’s misdemeanour offence system and magistrate courts, saying that this seminar is important because the burden to put into practice the changes will fall onto trained staff who will be capable of managing these changes.
He said that the project to strengthen these systems will last for 2 years and that it will be necessary to adopt a strategy defining the reform and to intensify work on legislation.
The Minister said that while basic new laws have been passed, there is much more work to be done to bring Serbia’s offence system in line with European standards.
“In a well-regulated state, 80 percent of cases between citizens and the state are misdemeanour offences”, Stojkovic said and added that until the focus is placed on that, Serbia will have a problem with disrespect for laws and institutions.
