Head of the European Commission delegation to Serbia-Montenegro Josep Lloveras said that the delegation of diplomatic corps representatives visited this area to show solidarity and to try to find ways for the European Union and its members to provide assistance immediately and through various future projects in association with the European Agency for Reconstruction.
US Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro Michael Polt said that citizens of inundated areas need all forms of assistance. He stressed that in the next period, after the situation stabilises, this region will need much larger assistance both in volume and economic development.
The delegation’s visit to Central Banat was lead by Serbian Minister of International Economic Relations Milan Parivodic, who said that while the Serbian government has already given ample assistance to the inhabitants of the flooded areas, it wanted to further encourage solidarity of the international community with today’s visit.
"Here with us are our good neighbours and representatives of the world's greatest powers, who in this way showed that they support us, that they sympathise with people's misfortune and want to help", Parivodic said and stressed that the US Embassy has already sent $50,000 in emergency assistance, while many other countries pledged to do the same.
The excursion was organised by the Serbian Ministry of International Economic Relations and included diplomats from the US, France, Great Britain, Slovenia, Germany, Belgium, Finland and the Netherlands as well as representatives from the European Commission. They met with members of the crisis response team in the Secanj municipality and discussed the largest problems facing citizens in the flooded areas.
Crisis response team representatives said that the damage caused by floods exceeds three billion dinars and that apart from reconstruction of houses and clearing the land of debris, it is necessary to permanently solve the problem of the increased water level of the Tamis River, which has to be done in agreement with Romania.
Minister Parivodic said at the meeting that the government's aim is to show foreign ambassadors and representatives the situation in the field and secure foreign financial aid for areas hit by flood.
After visiting Secanj and Jasa Tomic, the delegation will also visit the villages of Medja and Zitiste.
