Serbian Minister of Science and Environmental Protection Aleksandar Popovic underlined that based on this strategy the ground work for solving the waste disposal problem should be done in the next two years, so that all accumulated waste in Serbia should be cleaned up by 2010.
According to him, the Serbian government will set aside 60 million dinars for the construction of regional waste dumps which will cover areas with approximately 200,000 residents. Talks will be held in Brussels on May 25 with EU representatives who expressed readiness to financially support the realisation of this project.
Popovic explained that French companies were most interested in the construction of regional waste dumps in Serbia, however prior to entering into negotiations, it is necessary to conduct feasibility studies for each waste dump.
He said that the EU, which has already approved €14 million for the construction of a recycling plant for chemical and industrial waste in Serbia, positively assessed the National Waste Management Strategy.
It was also underlined that there are 180 waste dumps in Serbia but only one satisfies all European criteria, and up to 400,000 tons of chemical and industrial waste are disposed of in Serbia annually without additional treatment.
