Contract on Smederevo steelworks great event for Serbia

Smederevo, 18 April 2016

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said today that the sale of Smederevo steelworks to the Chinese He Steel Group will put the strategic partnership between China and Serbia to a higher level and allow the giant of ferrous metallurgy to become the most competitive in Europe.

After Minister of Economy Zeljko Sertic and He Steel Group Chairman Yu Yong signed the contract at the steel mill, Prime Minister Vucic said that this event is extremely important for the whole of Serbia, and not only for workers in the Smederevo company, who deserve this after many years of uncertainty.

He said, noting that the story of Serbian steelworks is the story about the battle, adding that Smederevo steelworks is the most important place in Serbia.

The Prime Minister congratulated the workers on the success, and also expressed his gratitude to the Chinese partners, with the hope that President of China Xi Jinping could visit Serbia in late June this year.

Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of China in Serbia Lu Sung pointed out that this is the first Chinese investment in a big Serbian company, and expressed belief that the Smederevo steel plant will be a model for cooperation between China and European countries.

I believe that the leadership of He Steel will achieve success and make a development, protection of the rights of workers and contribute to the local community, he concluded.

He Steel Group Chairman Yu Yong said that the company plans that Serbian steel mill becomes the most competitive in Europe, which will provide opportunities for work to all current employees of the steelworks.

He Steel is able to provide investments for the steelworks with the necessary technical transformation and the use of advanced technology.

He expressed gratitude to Vucic and the government of Serbia and said that the company was impressed by the professionalism and expertise of Serbian team working on this project in Smederevo.

Yong recalled that the company is the largest manufacturer of iron and steel in China and the second largest in the world, with more than 70 branches in the world and a large number of employees and with the most advanced technology.
