HBIS’ bid for privatisation of steelworks accepted

The Ministry of Economy announced today that the Chinese company HBIS (He Steel Group) made a binding offer to buy all 98 property units of the Smederevo steelworks for a total cost of €46 million, which is above the minimum price of the public call.

The commission for the conduct of the sale of assets of the steelworks opened today the financial offer filed by the only bidder in the process – the Chinese company HBIS in the presence of the bidder's representatives, and found that it was filed in accordance with the public invitation and that it meets all the requirements.
Upon a proposal from the commission, the Ministry of Economy made a decision declaring the only bidder as the buyer.
After obtaining an opinion of the competent department for prevention of money laundering, in accordance with the Law on privatisation, an agreement on the sale of assets of Smederevo steelworks will be concluded.
The company is a giant conglomerate and a world-wide giant in the production of steel.
Although the production and sale of steel are its main activities, HBIS is engaged in mining, financial, metal, managing modern logistic centres, and is active in other related industries.
HBIS plans to offer employment to all current employees (approximately 5,050). They will be offered professional development and training, including assignment to other countries, as well as further development of the optimised allocation of staff and reorganisation.
HBIS intends to provide all employees the same level of compensation and benefits as they have under the existing collective agreement.
