Speaking at a consultative meeting on further development of science and technology in Serbia held at the Sava Centre, Djelic said that annual investment in science in Serbia is now nearly €100 million, and the ministry’s plan is to increase this sum to €500 million or 1% of GDP.
According to Djelic, the funds should be provided through the budget or private investment.
He announced that during the next year, in cooperation with scientific institutions of the Ministry of Science and Technological Development a strategy will be designed to determine priority areas for investment in science.
It is important to complete the legislative framework, which implies making amendments to the Law on scientific research, said Djelic and added that by the end of the year a law on the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts should be adopted.
Djelic said that the fact that only 200 scientific patents were registered in 2007 is alarming.
He noted that it is worrying that only ten scientists who work in scientific institutions participated and highlighted that a law on innovation activities must be adopted.
The Minister said that the goals of the Ministry will be regulation of national pensions for deserving scientists and harmonisation of salaries at university and in scientific institutions.
According to him, a national centre for technology and development will be formed within the next four years, while the Vinca Institute will become a multinational science park.
Also present were former minister Dragan Domazet, president of SANU Nikola Hajdin and rector of Belgrade University Branko Kovacevic.
