Important progress in solving problems of stateless persons

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Kori Udovicki said today that the number of legally invisible Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians halved in the past four years, noting that the problem of stateless persons is solvable.

Participating in the event "Persons at risk of statelessness in Serbia, Progress Report 2010-2015", Udovicki recalled that since 2009, more than 20,000 claims have been resolved and that Serbia has been praised for systemic solutions in the Progress Report, within the framework of the negotiation Chapter 23.
She said that in this regard there is room for further improvement, since the risk of statelessness can be increased, and that in this regard cooperation with the Ombudsman and the UNHCR, which already exists and is defined by mutual agreement, must be continued.
Head of the UNHCR Office in Serbia Hans Friedrich Schodder said he was pleased with the progress in this area and that that organisation will continue to assist the government of Serbia, the Ombudsman and civil society in finding solutions for legally invisible Roma.
