US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Kathleen Stephens met with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus in Belgrade on Thursday to express the US administration's belief that the new government will be successful in implementing reforms.
Stephens also said that the US is interested in continuing cooperation with Serbia to help it resolve economic and political problems, reform the army of Serbia-Montenegro and achieve a law-abiding state.
Participants in the meeting agreed that the two countries have considerably improved bilateral relations and that the state union has achieved significant progress results. They also said that there is an interest to establish a dialogue to regulate cooperation with The Hague tribunal, a problem to whose resolution the US attaches great importance.
Kostunica said that the government is interested in improving cooperation with the US in all sectors of mutual significance and underscored the importance of resolving the problems in Kosovo-Metohija by introducing fresh institutional guarantees for Serbs and other ethnic communities in the province.
Deputy prime minister Labus outlined Serbia's priorities in the economy and pointed to the importance of regional cooperation.
Participants in the meeting also agreed that the government's work should be evaluated based on the results it will achieve over the next three months.
