Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica congratulated Dmitry Medvedev on his appointment as Russian President.
"It is my great pleasure to most heartily congratulate you on your appointment as Russian President and extend my best wishes at the beginning of your mandate.
By giving its support to you personally, to the leadership of the United Russia party and to the Russian Federation, the people of Russia have demonstrated that they believe in your commitment to a consistent and principled state policy.
I am certain that your appointment as Russian President, its impressive economic development and unfailing respect of the highest political principles and true values are a guarantee not only of the well-being of all Russian citizens and of Russia’s overall and strong development, but also of equal international relations.
Thanks to Russia’s principled support for respect of the UN Charter and the principles of international law, the violation of basic principles, on which peace and safety in the word are founded, was prevented at the Security Council. Russia’s consistent policy to preserve international order is the best defence against the introduction of violence as a way of solving conflicts in the world.
The Serbian people are deeply grateful to Russia and to you for the principled support for Serbia’s efforts to preserve the province of Kosovo-Metohija within its borders and to solve the province’s status in the UN Security Council.
Your consistent policy of respect for international law and the inviolability of UN members’ sovereignty and territorial integrity has helped Serbia greatly.
I would like to use this opportunity and once again say that Serbia is furthering its versatile cooperation with Russia and their political, economic and cultural relations, to which a special incentive will be given by prompt ratification and implementation of the energy agreement.
By congratulating you on your appointment, I am also sending you my heartfelt greetings for May 9, Victory Day, which would not have happened had it not been for your people’s crucial contribution, heroism and sacrifice in World War II.
Once again, I wish you huge success in your leadership in Russia, its overall progress and the strengthening of its role in the world as a guarantee for the preservation of peace and stability, freedom and respect of principles of equality and independence of states world wide”, reads the Prime Minister’s letter.
