Macut emphasised the importance of the IPU Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians, held in Belgrade under the theme Advancing parity: Breaking the barriers of gender stereotypes and negative social norms.
The Government of Serbia is committed to the empowerment of women in every field, which is confirmed by the fact that certain government departments are dedicated to working on these issues, said the Prime Minister, adding that in Serbia, women are parliamentarians, members of the government or have led governments in the past.
According to him, Serbia is one of the oldest parliamentary countries in Europe, which today has a significant participation of women in parliament and institutions and legal mechanisms that have increased the representation of women, although there is still room for progress.
He emphasised that today’s conference is another confirmation of the country’s commitment to the political empowerment of women, because gender equality is not only a social issue, but also a question of democracy, the quality of institutions, and economic and social development.
Ackson expressed satisfaction with the great attention being paid in Serbia to important topics, such as the position of women in society.
The IPU President emphasised that the Belgrade Declaration, which should be adopted at the end of the conference, attended by representatives from almost 65 countries, will be an important step towards greater representation of women in parliaments around the world.
