Speaking at a meeting of the European Commission mission in this city, Jeremic said that consolidation of democracy in Serbia should be one of the basic principles for the resolution of Kosovo status, since Serbia can speed up the EU accession of the entire region provided it is not given a fatal blow by imposing the independence of Kosovo.
Other principles are respect for inviolability of internationally recognised borders and for the sovereign equality of states in line with the Helsinki Final Act and the UN Charter.
Jeremic also said that ethnic Albanians have the right to self-government and added that Belgrade will do everything to find a solution that will satisfy both sides and that it is ready to start talks as soon as tomorrow because Serbia wants to be a part of the European solution, not of the Balkan problem.
Some countries in the international community want to impose Kosovo's independence upon Serbia, forgetting that that would actually mean a violent division of Serbia and would represent an "indecent proposal" for a European country in the 21st century.
Saying that in Spain it is redundant to speak about the danger of extreme solutions for nationalist conflicts, he paid respects to the hosts for the solution that found in an effort to reconcile different inclinations within their own country.
I need only mention one of the first goals of your constitution and that is to secure peaceful co-existence and freedom. And you know very well that the freedom of your autonomous communities and cities is not the same as independence, the Serbian Prime Minister underlined.
He stated that there can be no progress without full and open confrontation with the past and that is why the Serbian government carries out full cooperation with the Hague tribunal and why several indictees who are still at large must be located, arrested and handed over to the ICTY.
During today's visit to Spain, Jeremic will speak with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and Defence Minister Jose Antonio Alonso.
