In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Jeremic explained that consultations in the government have reached the final stage and ambassadors will be appointed in the next few weeks. He added this should be done quickly since in this crucial time Serbia does not have ambassadors in Great Britain and Italy, member countries of the UN Security Council or the Contact Group for Kosovo-Metohija.
According to Jeremic, Serbia will soon appoint its ambassador to Podgorica, as Montenegro is an important country in Serbia’s diplomatic and consular network.
As for the criteria for appointing ambassadors and other diplomats, Jeremic stressed he will always be guided by the candidate’s competence and choose people who will most properly advocate Serbia’s interests.
One of his aims are reforms at the foreign affairs ministry because international processes which include diplomacy, are different than they were in the previous century – they are more dynamic, intensive and unconventional.
Jeremic said he places a great deal of hope in the new forces in the Ministry to whom he will help to learn and advance, adding that in the course of every visit to foreign capitals he insisted on establishing diplomatic academies and possibilities for additional training of young Serbian diplomats.
Consequently, they will have an opportunity to be a part of the educational systems in Sweden, Germany, Austria, Russia, Greece and other countries, specified the Minister and added that the new forces will not be introduced to the detriment of highly seasoned diplomats.
I would like to achieve a healthy balance of youth and experience so that we could handle properly all the challenges which politics and diplomacy of a small country in the 21st century bring, concluded Jeremic.
