Jeremic told the Tanjug news agency that relations between Serbia and NATO as part of the PfP programme, apart from the security situation in Kosovo-Metohija, will be one of the topics of tomorrow's meeting of NATO Secretary-General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer with Serbian officials.
He explained that the presentation document, which Belgrade has not managed to prepare on time, identifies the areas in which Serbia is interested within the PfP and added that that is one of the first and most important documents a country has to submit when applying for membership in the PfP.
Without further Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans it is difficult to picture reforms in accordance with Copenhagen criteria for EU accession, Jeremic said.
Jeremic said that the position of the government is that security situation in the region needs to be stabilised so that reforms can gain momentum, as was the case with other transition countries.
He recalled that Serbia had a problematic history of relations with NATO and that this fact should not be denied, but stressed that Serbia’s aim at this moment is to join the collective security system of NATO through the PfP programme whereas the membership of NATO will be debated publicly when the time comes.
Jeremic said that Serbia is resolved to reforming the security sector.
