Jocic recalled on the occasion that heavy goods vehicles had damaged the bridge making it a threat to public safety, therefore a sum of more than RSD 100 million has been invested in its renovation.
He said that now the bridge has new hydroisolation and foundations, as well as a new layer of asphalt, which has made it completely safe for use.
According to Jocic, the Serbian Road Directorate obtained a loan from “Investbanka” for repairing a hundred bridges in Serbia, which will be the biggest building enterprise of its kind undertaken since the Second World War.
The bridge in Smederevo was built from 1973 to 1976, and was damaged in the spring of 1999, when it became a target of NATO air strikes.
