Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, and Serbian Patriarch Porfirije today signed an agreement securing financial resources for the completion of the remaining works on the Saint Sava church in Belgrade.
The agreement was signed in the crypt of the Saint Sava church in the presence of President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić.
On 25 June, the Government of Serbia adopted a conclusion approving the allocation of funds to the Serbian Orthodox Church for the completion of the works on the Saint Sava church in Belgrade. The funds will finance the remaining mosaic works, as well as the decoration and furnishing of one of the most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks of the Serbian people.
The Saint Sava church in Belgrade is the largest Serbian Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Sava, the first Serbian Archbishop and founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Serbia’s national and spiritual identity.
The church was built in the Vračar district, on the site where the relics of Saint Sava were burned in 1594 during the Ottoman occupation of Serbian lands, on the orders of the then Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha.
The interior works, including the installation of the monumental mosaics and the furnishing of the interior, were completed at the end of 2020.
