Speaking at the gathering at the Serbian Armed Forces Hall in Belgrade, Milićević said that this assembly is not merely a ceremonial gathering, but one of the most important annual working meetings of the homeland, the diaspora and Serbs from the region, noting that the diaspora is one of the most important parts of Serbia’s national identity and one of the country’s greatest assets for the future.
The Minister stressed that Serbia does not view its people abroad as guests, but as part of the same national, cultural and state-building community, adding that, alongside preserving language, culture and identity, one of the most important goals of state policy towards the diaspora is return.
He announced that one of the next concrete steps will be a comprehensive mapping of Serbia’s potential and the needs of local self-government units, in order to connect them with the knowledge, experience, capital and contacts of Serbian citizens living abroad.
Milićević also announced work on organising a major business forum intended for the business diaspora, returnees, investors and all those who wish to contribute to Serbia’s development.
Speaking about Expo 2027, he pointed out that it is an opportunity for Serbia to show the world what it has become and where it is heading, but also an opportunity for the diaspora to serve as one of the most important ambassadors of modern Serbia.
We want our people around the world to speak about a Serbia that is being built, developing and opening up new opportunities. Expo 2027 is not just a major event – it is a picture of a Serbia that believes in its future, the Minister said.
