The aim of the meeting is to improve common policies, strengthen institutional protection mechanisms and exchange successful practices in preventing all forms of violence against women.
The participants included European Union Commissioner for Equality Hadja Lahbib, Italian Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, as well as numerous high-ranking representatives of EU member states and other European countries.
On this occasion, Macura highlighted the strong commitment of the Serbian government to combating violence against women and improving policies that ensure better protection of victims.
The Minister emphasised that the increased activities of institutions, the improvement of the legislative framework and the introduction of more efficient intervention mechanisms have contributed to the number of people killed in cases of domestic violence decreasing by 40%.
She added that, however, we must not be satisfied as long as there is a single woman suffering, noting that the goal is a society in which no woman lives in fear.
According to her, the reduction in the number of women killed is an indicator that the measures are working, but each victim obliges us to be even more determined.
On the sidelines of the conference, Macura held a series of bilateral meetings with key European leaders, with whom she discussed practical cooperation in the areas of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The conference sent a clear and strong message that violence against women and femicide must not be tolerated in any society.
