EU assistance in fighting fires in Serbia

Assistant Minister of the Interior and Head of the Emergency Situations Sector Luka Čaušić stated that the Republic of Serbia has accepted assistance from the European Union through the activated EU Civil Protection Mechanism to combat fires in Deliblato Sands, as well as potentially in other parts of the country.

Čaušić stated that, following a proposal by the operational team coordinating the firefighting operation in Deliblato Sands, and in view of forecasts of exceptionally high temperatures across the country in the coming period, Serbia activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, of which it is a member.

He noted that Serbia had accepted the EU’s offer of assistance in combating fires both in Deliblato Sands and potentially in other parts of the country, given the exceptionally unfavourable hydrometeorological forecasts for the coming period.

Serbia has accepted an offer of four Black Hawk helicopters from the strategic reserve (rescEU), which are directly operated by the European Commission and are stationed in Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia: one from Romania, with a water-carrying capacity of 2.6 tonnes; two from the Czech Republic, each with a water-carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes; and one from Slovakia, with a water-carrying capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

Serbia has also accepted Germany’s offer of a 55-member firefighting and rescue team with 24 vehicles, as well as Romania’s offer to deploy a 69-member team with 15 vehicles.
