Serbia, Romania strengthening cooperation in transport sector

Belgrade/Timișoara, 21 August 2026

Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijević met today in Timișoara with Romania’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Radu-Dinel Miruță to discuss improving transport infrastructure and strengthening connectivity between the two countries.

Sofronijević emphasised that the construction of the Pančevo-Vršac-Vatin-Timișoara motorway will not only connect two countries and two cities, but also create new development opportunities for businesses and citizens.

The Minister said that the Serbian side is currently preparing the spatial plan for the special-purpose area and the preliminary design, expressing confidence that Serbia will complete its part of the work very soon.

We agreed to exchange, within seven days, a draft agreement that will further regulate all matters related to the construction of this motorway and the joint border crossing so that we can continue implementing this important project as efficiently as possible, she said.

According to Sofronijević, the meeting also covered the restoration of international passenger rail services between Serbia and Romania, as well as cooperation in the field of air transport.
