Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić met today with German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul to discuss opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation, the situation in the region and key geopolitical issues.
Đurić underlined that Serbia’s strategic objective is to become a full member of the European Union as soon as possible.
He noted that both sides agreed the two countries’ relations are highly developed and comprehensive, characterised by a shared readiness to enhance them further.
The head of Serbian diplomacy briefed his German counterpart on the position of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as Serbia’s commitment to preserving peace and strengthening stability and cooperation across the region.
He stated that partnership with Germany, as one of Serbia’s key partners, is of crucial importance in making Serbia’s and the region’s European perspective both tangible and attainable.
Speaking on Serbia’s progress in the EU accession process, Đurić asked for the support of the German Government in the further opening of clusters and advancing negotiations, in line with the European Commission’s report recommending the opening of Cluster 3.
The Minister expressed gratitude to Germany for the assistance it provides to Serbia.
Wadephul stated that Serbia and Germany are closely connected, both politically and economically, as clearly demonstrated by the fact that Germany is Serbia’s most important trading partner.
He conveyed that the talks confirmed there are many areas for deeper cooperation between the two countries, particularly in relation to energy security and the development of renewable energy sources.
Wadephul stressed that Serbia is part of the European family and should have the opportunity to participate fully in the EU’s community of values, adding that he and Đurić also discussed joint efforts to strengthen cooperation and uphold European values – freedom, democracy and the rule of law.
The Minister noted that Serbia, as the largest economy and most populous state in the Western Balkans, holds particular significance and must resolutely pursue its EU path, with Germany and the Union ready to accompany it on that journey.
