Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić emphasised today, at the first regional Euronews Adria Summit, that it is essential for Serbia to build regional relations on the principles of friendship, stability and mutual trust.
Đurić pointed out that Serbia is making significant progress in relations with most of its eight neighbouring countries and that its goal is for the region to be a space of peace and economic development.
In this context, the head of Serbian diplomacy assessed that the initiative of the United States of America in using economic cooperation as an instrument for overcoming divisions was an important step towards building a new type of relations in the Western Balkans.
He stressed that Washington’s constructive engagement in the process of normalising relations between Belgrade and Priština is useful and necessary, but warned that this process has been made more difficult in recent years due to the unilateral moves of the Priština authorities and the pressure campaign against the Serb community in Kosovo and Metohija.
Speaking about energy security, Đurić noted that Serbia is taking a responsible approach to diversifying energy supply sources and developing renewable energy sources.
He particularly praised cooperation with Hungary, emphasising that the country expressed its readiness to help Serbia maintain energy security as soon as sanctions were introduced against oil company NIS.
When it comes to European integration, Đurić emphasised that Serbia remains committed to reforms in the area of the rule of law and public administration, and that the European Commission’s recommendation to open Cluster 3 is a strong signal that the country’s efforts have been recognised.
