Minister for Family Care and Demography Jelena Žarić Kovačević pointed out today, at a plenary session within the Second World Summit for Social Development in Qatar, Serbia’s progress in economic and social development.
Žarić Kovačević emphasised that Serbia has made important steps in improving the economic and social position of its citizens in the last 13 years, and stated that since 2012, Serbia’s GDP has nearly tripled, from €35 billion to a projected €102 billion by 2027.
The Minister emphasised that the unemployment rate has decreased from 25.9% to 8.5%, the average salary has reached almost €1,000, while the minimum wage is €500.
According to her, the poverty risk index has been constantly decreasing, and in the past decade, more than 150 healthcare facilities have been built across the country.
The Minister noted that the Serbian government has established a system of financial incentives and subsidies to support families in more easily securing the conditions for expanding their household, with an emphasis on housing support programmes for young couples.
On the first day of the summit, a new political declaration was adopted, in which countries, including Serbia, renew their full commitment to the goals of sustainable development and to building a more just, inclusive and sustainable society.
