Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić stated that a strong and independent judiciary, which enjoys public trust, is a prerequisite for democracy and the rule of law and is of utmost importance for every society and state in Europe.
Vujić, who participated in the EU-Western Balkans Ministerial Forum on Justice and Home Affairs in Sarajevo, explained that in accordance with this goal, Serbia implemented constitutional and legal reform in the field of justice in 2022/2023.
The Minister announced an analysis of the implementation of the adopted set of judicial laws and their effects, which will be carried out in cooperation with the EU.
Serbia has made significant efforts over the years to improve the rule of law, not only through constitutional and legislative reforms, but also through improving technical and especially digital capacities that support the efficient work of judicial institutions, Vujić stated.
He particularly addressed Serbia’s commitment to the fight against corruption, underlining that the state is taking all necessary measures to strengthen its previous success in this fight.
The Minister said that in order to further improve the fairness and integrity of the electoral process, Serbia has taken concrete steps regarding the implementation of the recommendations of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
Through constant consultations with the ODIHR, the Serbian public authorities are continuously working on fulfilling its recommendations, which the ODIHR has recognised as the basis for improving electoral conditions in the country, the Minister noted.
When it comes to combating racism and xenophobia, Vujić emphasised that the Criminal Code of the Republic of Serbia prescribes penalties for criminal acts motivated by hatred and discrimination.
He said that Serbia is committed to its path towards the EU and will continue to implement all necessary reforms in order to become a full member of the Union.
